WHat To Expect AT EMMANUEL
Whether you are returning to church after a time away or are altogether new to the faith, looking for a new church home or simply seeking a place to be quiet, please know that you are welcome at Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
PARKING BEHIND CHURCH
Just follow the signs off Mitchell Street and you’ll find ample parking, as well as a covered portico at the main entrance.
WHEN YOU ARRIVE
Ushers will greet you and offer you a bulletin for the service. Emmanuel parishioners are incredibly friendly, so don’t be surprised if you’re also welcomed by several of us.
JOIN IN OUR SERVICES
Don’t worry if you’re a newcomer; the bulletin will show you how the service unfolds. All Episcopal services are based on the Book of Common Prayer. You’ll see the prayers, your responses, the hymns, the psalm, and the communion rite. You’ll also notice that some folks stand, some kneel, and some stay seated. Episcopalians come from a wide variety of worship styles, so there’s no right or wrong. Let the service move you. And come to coffee hour after the service ends!
EARLY SUNDAY SERVICE
The Early Service is at 8am in the warmer months and 8:30am in the darker, winter months. This service uses the older Episcopal language of Rite I. If you’re eager to get out on the boat, golf course, or go skiing, this one’s for you.
ACCESSIBILITY
Emmanuel is fully accessible for both worship and coffee hour. You’ll see space in the sanctuary for wheelchairs and walkers. Hearing devices are available, as well. There’s an elevator down to the Wood Family Fellowship Hall for our friendly coffee hour. You’ll find an accessible restroom in the lobby. Rev. Kay Houck’s office, the business office, and the Lottie Peterson meeting room are on the ground level.
INCLUSION
Emmanuel welcomes everyone. This means EVERYONE! The Episcopal church began ordaining women priests 50 years ago and women Bishops for much of that time. Episcopal priests may marry and have children. Members of the LGBTQ++ community serve as priests, bishops and in church leadership. We’re committed to eradicating racism and homophobia. You’ll see our Pride flag out front in June. And if you’re the ones who keep stealing it, let us know. We’ll buy you your own flag.
SECOND SUNDAY SERVICE
The 10am Service will be Rite II, which uses less formal language. Maestro Andre Strydom plays the organ and Emmanuel’s choir sets a stirring tone. At Christmas and Easter, you’ll also likely hear brass, timpani, or woodwinds and strings.
CHILDREN ARE WELCOME
We love having children in our services. Your kids won’t get the side-eye if they make noise. Childcare options currently include Sunday School for ages 5 through 5th grade and a middle/high school youth group. We add other options for little ones and as needed. Ask an usher when you arrive.
DRESS COMFORTABLY
You’ll see a wide range of styles, from jeans, shorts, and polo shirts to the occasional suit or sport coat. Bring your authentic self!
COMMUNION FOR ALL
Both Sunday services offer communion, and all are welcome. Ushers will guide you to the altar rail. A priest will give you the host, or wafer. Gluten-free wafers are available. Then you’ll be offered the wine in a chalice cup. Yes, it’s real wine. You may dip your host in the chalice or drink from the cup. If you don’t wish to take wine, cross your arms over your chest and you’ll receive a blessing. Communion will come to you if you’re not able to get to the rail—just let an usher know.
